Majoring in Australian Studies
Note: For students who commenced their degrees before 2009.
Major Sequence
Australian Studies courses can be studied individually or as a major sequence. They are available to all students within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and many from outside.
Australian Studies as a major sequence requires the completion of a total of 42 units of credit in Australian Studies approved courses. Students must complete one of the program's introductory core courses at Level 1, AUST1001 Australia: Representations, Identities and Difference or AUST1003 Australian Environmental History. The remaining 36 units of credit (or 6 courses) may be selected from the list of electives.
Majoring in Australian Studies provides students with the opportunity of studying their own culture and society from multiple vantage points in a transnational context. It plays a crucial role in the development of an informed and critically engaged citizenship and fosters critical and creative engagement with Australia in its relationships with the world.
A degree with a major in Australian Studies can be the launching pad for careers in any number of areas where informed and critical understandings of the development of Australian cultural production are necessary. In addition to teaching and administration in both the private and public sectors, there are opportunities in the media, museums, libraries, galleries and other cultural institutions.
